One 75 minute session
This class focuses on the use of a password manager and disk/file encryption to hide your sensitive information from prying eyes. Software will be demonstrated, and if time permits, you will get some hands-on experience.
PASSWORD MANAGER: Today you need to remember many passwords. You need a password for your e-mail account, your online banking, and other online accounts; the list is endless. It is critical for your online security that you use different passwords for each account to avoid giving away your entire online life in case one password is compromised. And it’s important that every password be strong, at least 12-15 characters long and including upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters like @, #, * etc. How do you remember all these cryptic passwords? The answer is a password manager, which helps you save and access all your passwords in a secure way.
DISK ENCRYPTION: How do you protect all other sensitive files and data that you have on your computer? You can use disk encryption software, which allows you to save sensitive files to your hard drive, USB flash drive or other device in a form that is unreadable to everyone but you.
In this class we will demonstrate how to install and use the KeePass 2 password manager and VeraCrypt encryption software.
Class notes and free software download sites will be distributed during the class. Bring your own flash drive so you can copy these files and take them home with you.
